Hats, Hats, Hats

Assistance League of Bend has a dedicated, caring and creative group of women who meet twice monthly to cut, sew and knit a variety of hats for cancer patients. Trendy as well as traditional hats or head coverings are created for the various seasons. Hats are delivered to St. Charles Hospital in Bend, the Bend Memorial Clinic as well as the St. Charles Cancer Center.

For fiscal year 2013/14 we delivered over 2,400 hats. As of October, 2015 we have delivered almost 600 hats. Our goal for this fiscal year is to exceed last year’s total.

The Hats program and its volunteers create knitted, crocheted and sewn hats for chemo therapy patients who have lost their hair during treatment for cancer at St. Charles Cancer Center or Bend Memorial Clinic. Assistance League also makes hats for the homeless that are distributed at Bend Community Center and through Mosaic Medical through their mobile medical vans that serve Bethlehem Inn, The Family Kitchen and Shepherd’s House. Members also make children’s hats for Mountain Star Relief Nursery, ages 6 weeks to 4 years of age. The sewn hats group meets every Wednesday from 10 AM to12 PM to cut and sew hats at our chapter house where there are a number of sewing machines and a cutting table. The knitted and crocheted hats meet the 1st and 3rd Saturday at the Broken Top Clubhouse from 9 AM to 11 AM. The Eagle Crest Mad Hatters meet the third Wednesday of the month at a private home in Redmond. If a volunteer can’t sew, knit or crochet but wants to help, they can cut the patterns out or they can help with delivery. Hats are delivered the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month and it only takes a couple of hours for the deliveries. Members and community volunteers can also make hats on their own and deliver them to the chapter house or to one of the chairmen for credit. Volunteers can buy their own supplies and be reimbursed or they can be procured from the chairman. The chapter provides all the materials and patterns necessary to make the hats. Many of the materials are donated.
